A beggar on full tilt

posted by stevesbets

It is a very common occurrence for people to beg for money in the chat on full tilt. It is a site that prides itself on allowing players to learn, chat and play with the pros so in order to accomplish the chat thing, they have few restrictions on who can chat at what tables. The standard request is for $5 and people will say things as extreme as, “$5 will save my life, could someone PLEASE send it to me”. Most of the time, they will offer something more back when they win by saying something like, “Hey could someone transfer me $5, when I get up to $25 I’ll send you $10 back”. Yesterday I saw the following comment:

hamburgler00 (Observer): Hey guys, I just signed up and Im not sure
about depositing on here yet? Could any of you throw me like 5
dollars so I can try out this site before I decide to put on the minimum
of $50? If I decide to put on $50 I’ll give you your 5 bucks back.

Now, I am in no way offended by the fact that people are begging for gambling money. If anything it makes me happy because we need as many poker players as we can get. However the logic of this request drives me nuts. Aside from the usual reason not to send money to random people (because you have no idea if they are good to their word), even if you take EVERYTHING this beggar says to be the 100%  truth, you still wouldn’t want to take him up on his offer. He really needs to work on the structure of his money requests.

    The beggars on sites really do my head in. I like to watch the high stakes games and they are obviously full of dickheads trying to grab a free $5 or so. I’ve also found that they seem to lurk in private tournaments and beg there, often pretending to be a member of the site holding the game.

    Iv’e begged around a bit on FT myself…and Iv’e transfered to beggers to. It makes me happy to help a poor
    guy out, and it makes me glad when somebody helps me out. What I don’t like is how people get upset with the beggers,
    they aint hurtin nobody. Poker is a game that requires emotional well being, and how better to feel good about your self then to do somthing selfless.

    Giving to beggers creates more begging. For example, a sociology student once observed some beggars around Upenn and found they were making an average of $10 an hour. That’s 30% more than minimum wage. Some of them are incapable of holding jobs, but some of them simply make a rational decision that they’re better off begging than working a low end job. If everyone stopped giving them money, they’d take up productive employment and contribute to society as well as act in their own long-term interest. Stick to real charities - giving to beggars does more harm than good.

    Hey. Can you transfer $5 to my account? I’ll pay you 200% of it when I make it to $15. I can’t do the $50 since my dad has access to my online bank account, and would go on tilt if he saw that I was “gambling”. (I’m 20 and a student) He just doesn’t get it;
    My dad says he’d rather I did not play poker and go bet on some horse once a week instead. That’s fine by him apparently. Even though I’ve played three live tournaments, won £70 (1st), and second in two small ones where I won £10 (profit). I’m just always watching it or chatting to friends about it and it pisses him off. Since I have f-all to do most days during the same I’d love to start playing online with $$.

    I’m ElectricHeat on FTP, feel free to send me an e-mail: mcgregsrichard[replace-with-at]googlemail.com

    I personally love watching the high stakes action on FT, including your play yesterday. What I truly hate is all of the offensive chat directed at the players regarding their lack of skill, moronic calls, etc. My feeling is that once a negative comment is made by an observer, they should be banned. There is no reason why high stakes players have to put up with all the crap offered by the wanna-bes. I feel certain that a player feels bad enough when he loses a hand and doesn’t need to be insulted by (probably 13-year olds) regarding their lack of skill. I personally have seen chatters degrade a player’s wife, brother, or the like. This is just more than any player should have to put up with. Maybe FT needs to change it’s policy and make it similar to PS…if you don’t have the cash for the buy-in on a certain table, you can’t chat. We’re lucky enough to observe all the high stakes action.

    I agree with Nat - this blog should be updated more. Ballers must do what they can to inform us media types of what’s going on, so we can run with a story and get more people to read up! Solid site though. Keep up the gooot work.

    The guy saying he wants $5 before he makes the minimum $50 deposit is a liar. He had to have had some amount of money in his account at some point (at a minimum $50 if he deposited and $5 for a transfer) and still has to have at least a penny in order to be able to chat. So obviously, this guy is lying.
